Taxes and Fees Overview

This article explains what the VoucherCart Taxes & Fees module does, how taxes and fees are applied, and where they appear for buyers and your finance/accounting teams.

Overview

The Taxes & Fees module lets you configure sales taxes and service fees for your product sales, and ensures they are displayed consistently to buyers throughout the purchase journey, from checkout through to confirmation email and order history.

Tax and fee data is also included in VoucherCart's reporting and order exports, giving your finance and accounting teams clean, structured figures for reconciliation and tax remittance calculations.

What you can do with this module

  • Apply sales tax (e.g. Sales Tax, VAT, GST, HST) to product purchases

  • Add service fees where applicable

  • Show buyers a clear, itemised breakdown of charges at checkout

  • Include tax and fee amounts in buyer confirmation emails

  • Make tax and fee data available in order exports and finance reporting

  • Display tax and fee labels in the buyer's language for multilingual stores

Designed for the full order journey

Taxes and fees are not limited to checkout. They are carried through the wider order experience, including:

Tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive pricing

The module supports both common approaches to tax pricing, which vary by region and business type:

Tax-exclusive pricing - The product price is shown before tax, and the applicable tax amount is added and displayed separately at checkout. This model is common in the United States and Canada, where sales tax is applied at the point of sale and varies by state or province.

Tax-inclusive pricing - The product price already includes the applicable tax. The tax component is displayed as a separate line item so buyers can see what portion of the total price is tax. This model is standard in the UK, EU, Australia, and many other markets, where VAT or GST is included in the displayed price by law.

Which model should I use?

This depends on your location and the tax rules that apply to your business.

If you are unsure which model applies, we recommend speaking with your accountant or tax adviser. VoucherCart does not provide tax advice.

Service fee

A Service fee can be enabled and configured separately from sales taxes. If your business charges a booking fee, processing fee, or handling fee on top of voucher prices, this can be set up and labelled independently.

Service fee amounts are shown to buyers at checkout and included in the same reporting areas as taxes - order exports, order detail views, and the finance dashboard.

Multilingual tax and fee labels

If your VoucherCart store serves buyers in more than one language, tax and fee label names can be configured to display in the buyer's selected language.

This allows you to present regionally appropriate terminology, for example, displaying "VAT" to UK buyers and "TVA" to French-speaking buyers, without requiring separate store configurations.

Taxes and fees in finance reporting

Tax and fee amounts are available in the following reporting areas:

  • Order exports — tax and fee columns are included, making it straightforward to import data into accounting software or spreadsheets without manual extraction

  • Order detail view — the full charge breakdown for any transaction can be reviewed at the individual order level

  • Finance dashboard — aggregated tax and fee figures are displayed for selected reporting periods

This allows your finance team to identify the tax collected, separate it from net revenue, and complete period-close entries without needing to back-calculate tax figures from gross order totals.

For accounting teams

Tax and fee figures in exports are provided as separate line values, not embedded in the order total.

This supports accurate journal entries, tax remittance calculations, and revenue recognition without manual reconciliation.

Summary

The Taxes & Fees module gives VoucherCart users a simple way to manage tax and fee requirements while keeping buyers informed and finance teams better supported.

It helps ensure charges are applied consistently, displayed clearly, and made available in the reporting tools needed to manage voucher sales effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VoucherCart calculate the correct tax rate automatically?

No. VoucherCart applies the tax rate you configure. You are responsible for entering the correct rate for your jurisdiction and product type. If you are unsure of the rate that applies to your voucher sales, consult your accountant or the relevant tax authority.

Can I apply different tax rates to different vouchers?

Yes. Tax can be configured at the product level, allowing you to create tax rules specific to the voucher product being sold.

Are taxes and fees shown to buyers before they pay?

Yes. Buyers see an itemised breakdown of applicable charges in the order summary before completing their purchase. This supports transparent pricing and helps reduce post-purchase disputes.

Can I use this module for US sales tax compliance?

The module supports tax-exclusive pricing and lets you configure the tax rate that applies to your sales. However, determining the correct sales tax rate, which can vary by state, county, and product type, remains your responsibility.

What tax labels are supported?

You can configure the label displayed to buyers to your preferrence (for example, "Sales Tax", "VAT", "GST", or "HST"). Labels can also be translated for multilingual sales pages.
