How to connect and use WooCommerce with VoucherCart

Connect WooCommerce so VoucherCart vouchers become coupons your customers can use at checkout.

The WooCommerce integration automatically creates a WooCommerce coupon each time someone buys a compatible VoucherCart voucher, so the recipient can use it on your WooCommerce store. To connect it, install the VoucherCart plugin in WordPress, copy your Website URL and API secret, then enter them under Integrations in your VoucherCart dashboard.

What the WooCommerce integration does

When a WooCommerce-compatible voucher is purchased, VoucherCart creates a matching coupon in your WooCommerce store. The coupon code is the same as the voucher code the recipient receives.

Your customers enter the code at checkout to take the voucher value off their order. VoucherCart manages every voucher's balance. When a voucher is redeemed in WooCommerce, the balance is updated in VoucherCart, and the WooCommerce coupon always shows the current VoucherCart balance, wherever the voucher was redeemed.

If the voucher is multi-use, customers can apply the coupon multiple times until the voucher is fully redeemed.

Which voucher types work with WooCommerce

The WooCommerce integration supports two VoucherCart voucher types:

  • Flexible Monetary: Single Use or Multiple Use/Redeem

  • Monetary (with options): Single Use or Multiple Use/Redeem

Before you connect WooCommerce

You'll need:

  • Admin access to your WordPress site, so you can install plugins

  • WooCommerce installed and active on that site (the VoucherCart plugin requires it)

  • Make sure you have administration permissions on your VoucherCart account.

Find VoucherCart coupons in WooCommerce

How your customers use a voucher at checkout

  1. On your store's cart or checkout page, your customer opens Add coupons and enters their voucher code.

  2. They click Apply [1]. The voucher value is taken off the order total.

THEN:

The coupon field may look different depending on your WooCommerce theme. For more about WooCommerce coupons, see Managing coupons in WooCommerce.

How balances and partial redemptions work

If a voucher is Multiple Use/Redeem, your customer can use the coupon on several orders until the voucher is fully redeemed.

A Single Use voucher's remaining balance is lost once it has been used, even if the order was worth less than the voucher. If you want customers to be able to spend a voucher across several orders, set it up as Multiple Use/Redeem.

Expired vouchers can't be used. Once a voucher expires in VoucherCart, its code can't be redeemed in WooCommerce.

If a WooCommerce order paid with a voucher is cancelled or refunded after it's completed, the voucher's balance isn't restored automatically. To restore the balance, cancel the redemption in VoucherCart.

Why isn't a VoucherCart coupon working in WooCommerce?

If a customer's voucher code doesn't apply at checkout, check whether:

  • The voucher type is compatible. Only Flexible Monetary and Monetary (with options) vouchers work with WooCommerce.

  • The voucher has already been fully redeemed.

  • Was the voucher sold before the integration was connected?

  • The voucher is active and redeemable in your VoucherCart account

  • The VoucherCart plugin is activated in your WordPress account

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is the WooCommerce coupon code the same as the voucher code?

A: Yes. The coupon VoucherCart creates in WooCommerce uses the same code as the voucher your customer received, so they enter that code at checkout

Q: Which vouchers can my customers use on my WooCommerce store?

A: Flexible Monetary and Monetary (with options) vouchers, set up as either Single Use or Multiple Use/Redeem.

Q: Can a customer use one voucher across more than one order?

A: Yes, if the voucher is Multiple Use/Redeem. They can apply the coupon to several orders until the voucher is fully redeemed. A Single Use voucher can only be used once.

Q: What happens if the order total is less than the voucher value?

A: It depends on the voucher type. With a Multiple Use/Redeem voucher, the remaining balance is updated and stays on the voucher for a later order. A Single Use voucher can only be used once, so any remaining balance is lost.

Q: What happens if an order paid with a voucher is cancelled or refunded?

A: The voucher's balance isn't restored automatically. To restore it, cancel the redemption in VoucherCart.

Q: Does redeeming a voucher in WooCommerce update its balance in VoucherCart?

A: Yes. VoucherCart holds each voucher's balance. When a voucher is redeemed in WooCommerce, VoucherCart updates the balance. The WooCommerce coupon always reflects the balance in VoucherCart, including after redemptions somewhere else, such as the VoucherCart dashboard.

Q: Where do I find VoucherCart coupons in WooCommerce?

A: In WordPress, go to Marketing > Coupons. Coupons created by VoucherCart have the description "Issued by VoucherCart", followed by the order reference.

Q: Will vouchers sold before I connected WooCommerce work on my store?

A: No. Only vouchers sold after you connect WooCommerce become WooCommerce coupons. Vouchers sold before you connected can't be redeemed on your WooCommerce store.

Q: Can customers use an expired voucher on my WooCommerce store?

A: No. Once a voucher expires in VoucherCart, its code can't be redeemed in WooCommerce.

Q: Can I disconnect the WooCommerce integration?

A: Yes, you can disconnect at any time. Vouchers already synced to WooCommerce before disconnecting stay there — disconnecting doesn't remove them. However, once disconnected, VoucherCart and WooCommerce no longer communicate. If a voucher is redeemed in one system after that point, the other won't be updated to reflect it, so balances can fall out of sync between the two.
