Redeeming a voucher, gift card, membership or ticket on Shopify eCommerce store

This article assumes you have already connected the VoucherCart integration for Shopify. If not see instructions on how to connect Shopify.

When a voucher, gift card, membership or ticket is purchased, a copy of the voucher code is automatically sent to your Shopify store as a discount code.

To redeem a VoucherCart voucher, gift card, membership or ticket, a customer will be presented with an option on Shopify to enter a discount code at checkout.

Shopify will always attempt to redeem the maximum amount of the voucher. If the order is less than the value of the voucher, the remaining balance will remain on the voucher to be used at a later date.

The voucher payment will show like this in Shopify’s dashboard order screen:

And within VoucherCart, you will see the redemption stored against the activity history of the voucher:

Redemptions

When a voucher is redeemed in Shopify, its balance in VoucherCart is automatically reduced by the redeemed amount, and the remaining discount value in Shopify is updated accordingly. The discount code remains unchanged.

If the voucher is redeemed through other channels, such as over the counter or via the VoucherCart dashboard, the discount in Shopify will still be updated to reflect the new balance.

You should avoid manually editing VoucherCart created discount within Shopify’s discounts interface to minimise a potential data-mismatch between VoucherCart and Shopify.

Cancelled orders in Shopify

If a voucher was redeemed against the purchase of a product and the product was subsequently cancelled in Shopify, you will need to manually add the balance of the redemption back to the voucher in VoucherCart by unredeeming the voucher as this will not be handled automatically by the integration.
